Aligning Your Money Habits With Your Values

    May 14, 2026by S.N. Perkins

Let’s be real for a second: Have you ever looked at your bank statement at the end of the month and thought, “Wait, where did it all go?”

You aren't alone. Most of us go through our early twenties (and thirties!) spending money on autopilot. We buy the $7 latte because it’s there. We subscribe to that third streaming service because everyone is talking about that one show. We buy the shoes because they were on sale. Individually, these things aren't "bad," but collectively, they often create a massive gap between what we say we care about and what we actually do with our money.

At Chazon Strategies, we believe that money is a tool. But if you aren't holding the tool correctly, you’re going to end up building a life that doesn't actually fit you. Aligning your habits with your values is the secret sauce to feeling at peace with your finances.

The "Values Gap" (and Why It Makes You Stressed)

The "Values Gap" is that weird, itchy feeling you get when your lifestyle doesn't match your soul.

Imagine you’re someone who deeply values adventure and seeing the world. That’s your core value. But when you look at your spending, 40% of your "fun money" is going toward late-night food delivery and random Target hauls. You’re spending money, but you aren't getting the adventure you crave.

This disconnect leads to financial anxiety. It’s not just that the money is gone; it’s that it was spent on things that didn't provide any long-term satisfaction. When you align your habits with your values, you stop "spending" and start "stewarding." You begin to see your income as a resource to fund the life you were meant to live.

Step 1: Identifying What Actually Matters to You

Before you can align your habits, you have to know what you’re aligning them to. This is where a bit of life coaching comes in handy. Most people have never actually sat down to define their core values.

    Ask yourself these three questions:

    1. If I had an extra $500 this month that had to be spent on something meaningful, what would it be?
    2. What are the three things in my life that bring me the most genuine joy?
    3. What do I want people to say about me 20 years from now in terms of how I used my resources?

Maybe your values are Generosity, Security, and Family. Or maybe they are Creativity, Freedom, and Health. There are no wrong answers here! Your values are yours. Once you have them, write them down. Put them in your phone’s notes or on a sticky note in your wallet.

Step 2: The Honest Money Audit

Now comes the part that feels a little like a trip to the dentist, necessary but a bit uncomfortable. Open your banking app and look at the last 30 days of transactions.

Label each major purchase or category with one of your values.

    • That gym membership? That fits under Health.
    • That donation to the local shelter? That’s Generosity.
    • That random Amazon box of gadgets? If it doesn't fit a value, it gets a big question mark.

If your "Question Mark" category is bigger than your "Value" categories, you’ve found the leak. The goal isn't to be perfect; it’s to be intentional. We want to move as many of those dollars as possible into the "Value" columns.

Step 3: Designing Your Habit Guardrails

Habits are just repeated actions. To align your habits with your values, you need to create "guardrails" that make it easy to do the right thing and hard to do the wrong thing.

If you value Security, one of your habits might be an automatic transfer to your savings account the second your paycheck hits. You don't even think about it; it just happens. That’s a habit aligned with a value.

If you value Community, maybe you set a budget for "Hosting and Connection." Instead of feeling guilty about spending money on a dinner for friends, you realize this is a direct investment in your core value. The guilt disappears because the habit is aligned.

Protecting Your Values with the Right Tools

Sometimes, aligning your habits with your values means looking at the "boring" stuff, like insurance. Hear me out!

If you value Family and Legacy, then making sure your loved ones are taken care of isn't just a "bill", it’s a declaration of your values. This is why we talk so much about things like life insurance for young adults. It’s not about doom and gloom; it’s about saying, "I value my family's future so much that I'm going to protect it today."

When you view insurance through the lens of stewardship, it stops being a chore and starts being a way to secure the things you love. It provides the "peace of mind" value that allows you to take risks in other areas of your life, like starting a business or traveling.

The Power of Saying "No" (So You Can Say "Yes")

Alignment requires boundaries. When you know your values, it becomes much easier to say "no" to things that don't fit.

If your friends are planning a lavish weekend getaway that costs $2,000, but your core value right now is Debt Freedom, you have a compass to help you navigate that decision. You aren't saying no because you're "broke"; you’re saying no because you are "committed."

There is an incredible amount of power in saying: "That sounds fun, but it’s not where my priorities are right now." It shifts the power from your peer group back to your own hands.

    Practicing Stewardship Daily

Stewardship is just a fancy word for taking care of what you’ve been given. At Chazon Strategies, we believe we are all stewards of our time, talent, and treasure.

When you buy a coffee, you’re stewarding a few dollars. When you choose a life insurance policy, you’re stewarding your family’s future. When you work with a life coach to figure out your career path, you’re stewarding your potential.

Alignment isn't a one-time event. It’s a daily practice of checking in with yourself.

    • Is this purchase bringing me closer to my goals?
    • Is this habit reflecting the person I want to become?
    • Am I protecting what I value most?
