    Rest as an Advantage

    Dec 12, 2025by Cheryl Perkins

    Introduction: A Personal Story

Years ago, during one of the busiest seasons of my professional life, I found myself leading a major project with constant meetings, shifting expectations, and pressure coming from every direction. I told myself what many leaders do:“I’ll rest when this is over.”But “over” never came. Instead, I began to feel mentally cloudy, emotionally reactive, and spiritually disconnected.

One morning, after a particularly draining week, I felt a quiet nudge to pause—not collapse, but intentionally stop. I stepped away for an hour, took a slow walk, breathed deeply, and prayed for clarity. It was astonishing how quickly things shifted. What felt tangled became clear. What felt heavy became manageable.

In that moment, I learned what I now teach leaders everywhere:Rest is not the absence of work—rest is the reset that makes leadership sustainable.

    The Leadership Power of Rest

Whether one approaches leadership through faith or through personal values, the truthremains: rest is a strategic advantage, not a weakness. It is a discipline that strengthens clarity, sharpens focus, and restores emotional balance.

    1. Rest Restores Clarity

When leaders live in constant motion, their vision blurs. Rest slows the mind enough to see what truly matters and identify what requires adjustment, elimination, or delegation.

    2. Rest Resets the Soul

Pressure drains emotional reserves. Rest restores emotional posture—replacing reactivity with stability, and anxiety with grounded decision-making.

    3. Rest Realigns Motives and Priorities

In periods of quiet, leaders can evaluate whether they areoperatingfrom purpose or pressure. Stillness invites honesty.

    4. Rest Strengthens Resilience

Leaders who pause regularly recover faster, adapt better, and withstand turbulence without fracturingunder weight.

    Leadership Development Points

    1. Build RestIntoYour Rhythm,Notas a Reward

Leaders who wait until burnout to rest lead reactively. Schedule rest as part of your leadership strategy.

    2. Protect Mental Margin

Innovation, creativity, and problem-solving flow from leaders who have space to think, not leaders who are rushing.

    3. Practice Micro-Rest Throughout the Day

Small resets—60 seconds of deep breathing, a short walk, or a quiet moment—accumulate intoemotional stability.

    4. Lead From Alignment, Not Exhaustion

Decision-making improves when your soul is steady, your emotions are grounded, and your yes is not built on anxiety.

    5. Normalize Rest in Organizational Culture

Teams mimic leaders. When leaders rest well, they model sustainability and create healthier, more productive environments.

    Scripture Focus

    • Psalm 23:2–3–“He makes me lie down in green pastures… He restores my soul.”

    • Matthew 11:28–“Come to me… and I will give you rest.”

    • Mark 6:31–“Come with Me… and rest a while.”

These scriptures anchor the principle that rest is part of divine design—not an interruption to purpose but a fueling of it.

    Reflection Questions

    1. Where in my leadership rhythm am Ioperatingfrom exhaustion rather than clarity?

    2. What simple rest practices can I begin incorporating daily or weekly?

    3. How does my leadership change when I am rested versus depleted?

    4. What boundaries do I need to honor to protect my emotional and spiritual health?

    5. What would my team gain if I led from a posture of rest rather than strain?

    Closing Prayer

God, renew my clarity, restore my soul, and steady my steps. Teach me to lead from rest, not rush. Help me release pressure, embrace Your rhythm, and find strength in stillness. Align my motives, purify my intentions, and replenish what life has drained. May rest become my rhythm, my strategy, and my source of sustainable leadership. Amen.
