Stay the Course: Leading Through Turbulent Seasons

    Dec 05, 2025by Cheryl Perkins

There’sa moment onalmost everyflight when the pilot announces,“Please fasten your seatbelts—we may experience turbulence.”

On a recent trip, Iheard thatfamiliarinstructionjust as the plane lifted from the runway. The enginesroared, the plane angled upward, and that familiar in-between feeling settled in—the moment when you are no longer on the ground but not yet settled in the air.

    Youcan’tget off the plane.

    Youcan’tdecideyou’drather take a different flight.

Youcan’tturn around because things feel shaky.

You buckle up and ride it out.

    Leadership feels exactly like that.

When you commit toPlan A—the assignment, purpose, or vision originally placed in your heart—there will be moments when turbulence hits. Seasons of pressure, fatigue, uncertainty, or discouragement can make you question the very thing you once felt confident about. But the turbulence is not a sign that you missed God or misread your purpose.

    It’sa signyou’reascending.

For Christians, this reflects Hebrews 10:35–36:

“Do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need endurance…”

For all leaders—whatever their background—the principle stands:

Endurance strengthens the leader. Pressure shapes clarity. Commitment builds capacity.

This week may have tested your resolve, but testing is not punishment—it is preparation. What is being stretched in you is beingdeveloped. What is being challenged is beingstrengthened. What feels uncomfortable isactually equippingyou for your next level of influence.

Why Leaders Must Stay Committed to Plan A

Whetheryou’releading a team, project, organization, ministry, or your own personal growth journey, staying committed to your original vision is one of the deepest marks of leadership maturity.

These truths apply to believers and non-believers alike—but for Christians, they echo powerful spiritual anchors:

    1. Pressure Produces Strength

Leadership resilience is formed when you face challenges, not when everything is easy.

    2. Clarity Deepens in Turbulence

Just as pilots trust their instruments, leaders must trust their core values and purpose when external circumstances feel unstable.

    3. Commitment Builds Identity

Motivation fluctuates. Commitment shapes who you become.

    4. Fatigue Is Not Failure

Leadership weariness is real—but exhaustion is an invitation to pause, not to quit.

    5. Trust Is Your Anchor

For the believer, trust in God stabilizes the soul.

For every leader, trust in the process keeps you grounded.

    Leadership Development Points

    1. Hold your visionsteadyeven when progress feels slow.

Great visions unfold in stages. Slow does not meanstopped. Stay faithful to the process.

    2. Build habits that outlast feelings.

Feelings are inconsistent; disciplined habits create themomentumleadershiprequires.

3.Anticipateturbulence—don’tinterpret it as a sign to quit.

Resistance is part ofelevation. Turbulence meansyou’rerising, not retreating.

    4. Practice internal alignment before making external decisions.

Calm leaders make clear decisions. Attune your inner world before responding outwardly.

    5. Protect your “Plan A” from distractions labeled as opportunities.

Not everything that glitters is a God-aligned or purpose-aligned invitation. Guard your focus.

    6. Seek wise counsel whileremainingfaithful to the original assignment.

Good counsel clarifies; itdoesn’tredirectyou awayfrom what you were called to do.

    7. Honor your pace—elevation requires patience.

Rushing leads to instability. Growth requires timing and trust.

    8. Strengthen your inner life through prayer, reflection, or grounding practices.

A steady soul produces steady leadership. Nourish the inner world that fuels your outer work.

    Scripture Focus

    Hebrews 10:35–36 (NIV):

“Do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need endurance so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised.”

    Reflection Questions

    1. Where am I tempted to abandon ormodifymy original vision?

    2. What “turbulence” am I currently experiencing, and how is it shaping me?

    3. Which habits must I strengthen to stay committed when motivation fades?

    4. What does “trustingthe process” look like in this season?

    5. How is this challenging period preparing me for future leadership?

    Closing Prayer

God, strengthen me to stay committed to the vision You placed in my heart. When turbulence arises, anchor my spirit. When doubts whisper, steady my mind. Help me lead with endurance, clarity, and unwavering trust. Shape me through this process and prepare me for what is ahead. Amen.
